PLAYERS OUT TO MAIM EACH OTHER

SPIRIT OF RUGBY CRITICISED Outspoken criticism of the spirit in which rugby football is played to-day was made by Mr. W. J. Anderson at a meeting of the Horowhenua Rugby Union on Tuesday night. His views found the support of other members. Mr. Anderson said that there was too much of the spirit of competition instead of the friendly sporting spirit that was felt in friendly games as apart from competition games for trophies. If there were no competitions there would not be the fights on rugby fields that were seen to-day. Players just went out there to maim each other if they were playing for a shield. They should forget the cups because the spirit of friendly rivalry was everything.
