VOLCANIC ERUPTION DEVASTATES ISLAND
Reeeived Tuesclay, 7.0 p.m. SUVA, Sept. 17. A volcanie eruption is now devastating tlie isolated island of Ninafoou in the Tongan gronp, 450 miles east oi' Fiji. A, plane. from Snva reconnoitred and found parts of the island wrecked and blasted. Violent eruptions are continuing. A Catholie priest and some of the 1200 islanders near a partly overwhelmed village, were seen signalling the plane. The Government of Tonga reports that it is rushing a ship with a doctor and medical snpplies to Ninafoou whieh is world farnous among philatelists for its tin can- mail earried out to occasional passing ships by swimmers. Previous eruptions occurred in 1929 and 1856.
