PLANS FOR DEVELOPMENT
Plans for the development in Australia of the film industry comparable to that of England and America are announced by Mr. Morman B. Rydge. This is very gratifying, specially to those people
responsible for planning and pfoducing Columbia's first Australian film, "Smithy," which will shortly be released in New Zealand. As the first American company : to pee the possibilities of Australia, Columbia appreciates a confirrfia- ■ tion of their belief from such a world famous film figure as Mr. Rydge. It is mainly through the strivings of Mr. N. P. Pery that "Smithy" reached the screen. Producer of the film, Mr. Pery was confident that a first class picture could be made in Australia, with a completely Australian cast and technicians. Shortage of capital has been the main handicap in the past. With both British and American companies prepared to invest in Australia, this set-back has bqen overcome. From every point of view, it is Mr. Pery's contention that Australia is ideal for the making of pictures. Scenery and climate are varied and predictable, and there is a tremendous pool of talent awaiting development. '
