WHEN JAPS WERE OFF NEW ZEALAND COAST

KURrE, Sept. 12. Proof that a Japanese submarme was in Australian ^ind New Zealana waters in 1943, has been obtained from a former officer of the vessei who lives in the New Zealand area of the British Coinmonwealth Occupation Force. He says that the submarine was No. 38, A class, which sailed from Kure in 1942. It was stationed at Rabaul from where she earried stores to Salamaua. Later the submarine made a trip around Austraiia and j\ew zeaiana and in November, 1943, she was about 50 miles off the west coast of the North Island where she was picked up by two aireraft and attacked but was undamaged. Both Mount Cook and Mount Egmont were noted by the crew of the submarine. It was thought to have been sunk during action in the Philippines in 1944.
