Horowhenua Council leets ; ' Mr-. G. A. Mohk presided. at the September meeting of the Horowhenua County Council. Also present were: Crs. R. W. Jenkins, A. M. Colquhoun, J. W. Gimblett, J. H. P. Liggins, J. D. Aitchison and R. W. T'aylor. Leave of absence was granted to Cr. W. E. Barber, Messrs. F. H. Hudson (clerk) and W. H. Fraser (engineer) were also present. Ihformation on the housing situation in the district was requested by the Dominion Settlement and Population Association. The clerk was authorised to reply to the letter. The bad state of. the Kaihinau Road was referred to in a letter from Mr. R. M. Large, Shannon. He stated that nothing had been done to the portion of the road near his property, and it was unsafe in wet weather. Cr. Liggins said that the bulldozer had gone in, and done splendid work up to a point. Nothing had been done near Mr. Large's property. He agreed that the road was unsafe. It was impossible to send the grader in, but the bulldozer could cope with the situation. The engineer was authorised to do this. The Levin Plunket Society wrote requesting a grant. Cr. Taylor suggested that a review of the whole system be made, and a grant be made to the parent body to be divided proportionately among the sub-branches. Mr. Monk said that the amount donated went to the parent body in each district-. South of Otaki, however, the subbranches were controlled from Paekakariki. There were 15 subbranches in that district. No grants would be made to any subbranches/ but they benefited automatically. from the donation to the parent branches. It was decided to - make a grant of £5 5s to the Levin branch. A letter was received from Mr. H. 3. Prouse, Kawiu Road, Levin, complaining of the condition of storm water drains on the road. He said that as a result his paddocks had been flooded. Cr. Colquhoun said that the situation was particularly bad on the corners of the road. School buses could not negotiate them. It was decided to refer the matter to the wcrks committee for a report. Mr. H. O. Manz wrote informing the council of the bad state of the Te Roto Road. Cr. Taylor said that the road had fallen into disrepair; it was full of potholes. The matter was referred to the engineer. Mr. Monk informed the meeting that as a result of a conference with the Waikanae Beach Progressive Society, four conveniences of a temporary nature would be installed at the beach in time for the holiday season. It was not proposed to erect permanent conveniences. Cr. Colquhoun said that the buildings could be made at the council's depot and transported to the beach. The beaches in the district were the responsibility of the council.
