BUSHFIRES AND HEAT WAVE IN AUSTRALIA

Buslilires threalened many Sydnev and Blue Alountain homes today when a lieat wave, backed by a blustering nortlnvesterly, sent the tenqjeralun: to 87.4 degrees at 1 p.111., the highest fuj Septetuber since 101 1. A blauketing dust haze interfered with air schedules. Fire brigades were busy with Imsli iires at many points but so far no houses have sul'fered. The entire population of Ilazelbrook, Blue Mountains, is lighting a lirc which is travelling before the wind 011 a two-mile front. Despite the strong Avind and cobl water, the beaclies had large at tendances. The heatwave kept Sydney abovc SO degrees for more than five hours and raised flood fears in the Riverina where the wann weather is expected to me.lt mountin snows. The hot north westerly winds have brought clouds of dust from the drought-stricken in land. A warm dry night followed with Ihe temperature over 71 degrees at 1.80 a.m. today and rising. Searing winds cansed further stock losses in the drought country where temperatures up to 08 degrees were recorded.
