HAWERA, Sept. 12, Erom tonight Hawera tyill be without the s.ervices oi the yolunteer members of its Fire Brigade the 17 men having resigned in a body. This action is th.e sequel to a lon^ standinT dispute. ■ Some months _ ago, despite the protests of 700. residents atva public meeting, the Fire Bpard asked for the resignation of the fuli-time s.uperintendent, and subsequently appointed an honorary superintendent. This led to further protests .by the business community, and an ultimatum bv the brigade volunteers that they would resign unless a full-time superintendent was appointed. The board refused to change its policv. and the volunteers will hand in their uniforms and equipfnent tonight. The town is now left with only two permanent men, a station officer and a fireman-driver. Some of the men who resigned have had up to thirty years of service. -
