ATOMIC ENERGY FOR SHIPS
Received Tuesday, 11.55 p.m. LONDON, Sept". 10. The use of- neuclear energy for the propulsion of large ships, appeared to he on the horizon though distant, said Sir Amos Ayre in his presidential address to the Institute of Marine Engineers. One pound of uranium was equivalent" in energy to 1500 tons of coal, which would mean fundamental changes in ship design including the disappearance of fuel buiikers. Speeds up to 60 knots might he possihle "for 1000 feet long ships, though thus far this was in the realm of imagination. ' 'It seems we are on the verge of advances in marine propulsion even greater than the vast progress of the last 50 years," he said.
