PROMISING MAORI SINGER "An outcome of the conference of tribal representatives at Rotorua last week for the jubilee celebrations of the Bishop of Aotearoa is that Inia Tewiata, a young Maori singer, at one time of Otaki, will probably be given a chance to go abroad and study. He sang at a sacred concert in the presence of the Primate (the Most Rev. Archbishop West-Watson) , Bishop Bennett, and Sir Apirana Ngata, all of whom agreed that something should be done to assist him. Subsequently at the conference Sir Apirana suggested a plan for - the raising of funds from the Maori people, in which with contrlbutions from the Native Trustee and Ihe Maori Land Boards and a Government subsidy, would provide £1500, and the proposal was endorssd by the conference. Mr. Tewiata is well-known in Otaki as another Paul Robeson, his ; voice being exactly the same as that world-renowned singer.
