Saturday's Rugby A change has been made in the starting times of the rugby matches to be played at the Levin Park Domain on Saturday. They are now as follows: Senior Nash Cup final, Foxton v. Otaki, at 1.30 p.m., Mr. C. E. Wiseley (referee) ; junior representative, Bush v. Horowhenua, at 3 p.m., Mr. W. Williams (referee) . Rotary Assembly The first assembly of the Fiftythird District, Rotary International, has opened at , Timaru, INew Zealand having been divided into two districts, the Fifty-second and the Fifty-third. Sir Herbert Hart, of Masterton, has been elected district governor. More than 70 delegates are present. Rehabilitation Loans .Reaching a total for the month of £1,896,347, rehabilitation loan authorisations during July eclipsed all previous records, and brought the grand total of loan authorisations made until .the end of that month to £25,003,610 for 32,992 exservicemen and women. The monthly total was almost £440,000 more than the figure for June and nearly £51,000 above the previous record, established in May. . New Dairy Season Outputs of Northland dairy companies show declines ranging from 10 to 25 per cent. for last month, and 12 to 30 per cent. for the first three months of tlje season. Since the drought broke, on April 20. only 25 days of 136 have been without rain. The continuous wet ahd the late frost last week have checfeed pasture growth, but with pastures res.ted .and. increased fertiliser ration, the prospects for.' this season are, regarded brightly. ; : ' ' L.T ' ' Booklet Before School Books Strong criticism of the action of the Government in issuing every liouse-holder with a eopy of the 52page booklet "War Effort" when there was a shortage of school textbooks and late delivery of school journals, was expressed by several members at a' meeting of the Auckland .' Education Board. After a spirited discussion' a motion was passed protesting against the delay in the provision of school books.
Mud Houses "I notice that one of yo.ur Members of Parliament was laughed at for suggesting that houses be bui-lt, of mud and straw. I think that was a sensible- suggestion. Mud and straw houses are both warm and quite clean and are certainly better than nothing," said Mr. Peter Dawson, eminent Australian baritone, in Palmerston North yesterday. It had been a common sight in Australia, said Mr. Dawson, and there was certainly n0 lack of material for ?the job.. Educational Certificate The R.N.Z.A.F. educational services became well-known to the pubiic during the war and many thousands of airmen and airwomen who completed courses or attended classes in off-duty hours, are entitled to receive documentary recognition of their studies. The • R.N.Z.A.F. educational certificate will be issued on application to all students who completed general educational courses. There is a general exception in that the certificate is not issued to those taking the courses in preparation for pubiic examinations.
Magistrate's Stand "I decline to make a fixture until the appointment of another Magistrate," said H. W. Bundle, S.M., in the Dunedin Magistrate's Court, when an application had been made for the adjournment of a case and Mr. Bundle set the date for the hearing, but not a definite fixture. "I have communicated several times with the undersecretary of Justice, but no satisfactory reply has been reCeived yet," concluded the 'Magistrate. Mr. J. R. Bartholomew, the senior Magistrate, retired some months: ago. Third Grade Meat Exports "That the export of third grade meat to Great Britain should become a permanent measure," was the text of a remit from the.OtakiTe Horo branch, carried at a meeting of the Manawatu provincial executive of the Federated Farmers in Palmerston North yesterday. In support of the remit it was stated that the meat board now wanted to abolish the export of third grade meat, but in view of the shortage of food in Britain, .it was considered the measure should not be pushed aside. The meat and wool section is to be asked to unvestigate the matter and -report back to the executive.
