UNEASINESS FELT

(Speeial Correspondent.)

Mptery iMissSes In CONTRADICTORY REPORTS

LONDON, Sept. 3. A well-known war correspondent, Mr. Alexander Glifford, who was sent to Sweden by the Daily Mail to investigate the.constantlv recurring reports of finysterious projectiles seen over Scandinavia, states that while a considerable number of Swedes discount and disbelieve the stories, a number of witnesses ihsi'st that they have seen long cigar-skaped missiles travelling flcross •the country, both in d^ylight and at night. Although the details vary in sonie iparticulars, most of those who claim t-o have seen the projectiles kgrqe upon their shape, and that they emit a bright orange or green Jiglit from the - tail. Oue of the most puzzling features oi these reports, says Alr. Glifford, is that so far no evidence whatever has been recovered, in spite of elaims by a number of people to have seen the missiles mxplode and disintegrate in mid-air Wlien one of the projectiles was report ed to have crashed into Lake Kalix, in Nortliern Sweden, the Swedish General Staff had the lake drained, bui found nothing unusual. Another puzzling -f ea ture is the claim made by witnesses that the missile.travel quite silontly, pursuing leve flight at heights varying from 1000 to 3000 feet. Experts claim that it is impossible for a wingless eraft or pro jectile to travel silently, but this ha.uot sliaken the couviction of a large aujuber of people, who are prepared to swear positively that they have seen the eerie flight of what the Swedisli ' Bress calls "ghost inisailes!" Afr. Glifford says the persistent reports of the presence of these strange visitors in the Swedisli skies is causing widespread uneasiness, and that those who bolieve in the existcnce of the nii.ssiles are conviiu-ed that . they are radio-directed from sites 011 the Russian Baltic coast. These believers are at a loss to ex plain why Ihe air above Sweden should be used for these -experiiuents, but claim that it is possiblv due to the fact that German launcliing sites which pointed uortli were being used. Unbelievers openly seoff and even make the report the subjeet for gags 011 the musie hali stage and for carloons in the newspapers. Air. Glifford states tliat reports are now being received that the missiles liave been sighted over Denmark, and tlie_ Danish General Staff admits that it is cooperating witli the Sivedes in carrving out investigations.
