FARMERS RESENTFUL
DEMAND BY MR. NASH A report from New Plymouth on August 30 that the Minister of Finance (Ilon. W. Nash) had demanded that 250,000 bobby calf skins be retained for the New Zealand footwear industry at half the ruling export price, raised considerable protest at a meeting of the Manawatu provincial executive of Federated Farmers in Palmerston North yesterday. One delegate stated that the present value of a skin overseas was between six and seven shillings, while Mr. Nash wanted to conliscate 250,000 at 3/- each. It was explained by Mr. Gimblett that the price per pound for bobby calf ' skins had risen this year from 24d to 48d but tlie price to farmers had been sealed at 32d, the balance going to the eentral fund. Negotiations between the (-rovernment and the eentral executive of the Bobby Calf Industry had taken place recently but the deeisions arrived at had not yet been announced. Tt was decided to conimunicate with the Dominion Secretary and request in-" t'ormation -on this subject.
