HAWKER FURY WINS EMPIRE RACE
Received Monday, 11 a.m. LONDON, Sept. 1. a Hawker Fury plane won the Empire high-speed aeroplane race oi' 174 miles, averaging 353 miles per hour. a de Havilland Hornet was second with 342 miles per hour and a Super-Marine S'eafang was third with an average of 332. Originally a de Havilland Vampire jet-plane was awarded the race, averaging 454 miles per hour, but the stefoards later disqualified the Vampire because it flagged away too early owing to the slarter's wateh being affected by]
the slip stream from another plane. The judges adjusted the Vampire's average speed to 427 miles an hour, allowing for the early start.
