BILLY CRAWFORD PASSES
WEl.LiNGTOX, Aug. 27. One of the best known iigures in New Zealand boxing, William (Billv) Craw ford, died at Silverstream Ilospital thi.week. In 1909 he was Manawatu ligiit weight amateur champion. He never succeeded in winning the New Zealani. cliampionship but was frequently a strong contender. When Dave Smith champion of Australia, visited Neu Zealand accompanied by Arthur IveJly Crawford aeted as sparring partner It. the latter, travelling with him througk out the country. One of his most notablt assoeiations was with Johnny Suimners British Empire welterweight champion for whom he acted as sparring- partnei in New Zealand. Later he travelleu overseas with him, returning to Neu Zealand in 191 S, Crawford set up as n trainer in Wellington. Among those ti reeeive instruction from him was Tom Heeney. In 1934 Crawford tooK Maurice Strickland to England where he had many successes. When Strick lantl went to America in search o: liigher honours, Crawford returned ti New Zealand.
