Received Tuesdav, 7 p.m. LONDON. Aug. 27. Two American radio engineers have produced an invention by which the blind can "read" a printed page. Its possibilit ies are being consi'dered by a connnittee at St. Dunstans under Pro fessor E. D. Adrian, of Cambridge University. The invention comprises a tube th»size of a fat fountain pen, Jinked by wires with a small box containing bat teries and radio valves. Light weiglif earphones are plugged into Ihe box. A.s the tube is movod along lines of print the letters are illuininated by a tiny spot of light. The patterns tliey reflecl into Ihe tube are converted into a serie.of sounds which, with practice, can be read as- easily and quicklv as Morse Ihie invention will be further improved before commercial models, expected to oust the Braille system, are manu factured.
