LEVIN SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE Mr. A. C. Kennerley pfesided at a meeting of the Levin School committee last night. Also present were Messrs. D. P. Todd (secretary) , F. O. Malcoim, W. R. Jack, A. Witherow, H. Bull, A. J. Shaw and R. Young. An apology was received from Mr. A. R. Ransom. Headmaster's Report The headmaster's report was read and adopted. It was as follows:"The school elosed on August 23 with the roll at 585. The attendance during the past four weeks has been very fair. School resumes on Monday, September 9. Mrs. R. V. Haggerty has appl'ied' for a further three months' leave of absence. "The Arbor Day functions at the school, and that. held by the Levin and District Beautifying Society, passed off very successfully. "A demonstration on the building of a compost heap, by Mr. T. Petty of New Plymouth was very interesting and instructive. Good entries were received for calves and home gardens in the Horowhenua Boysr and Girls* Agricultural Cluo's competition.* There have been many visitors, mainl'y soldierteachers, observing at the school in the past month. The Horowhenua primary schools football representatives left for Lower Hutt on Friday, August 23. Harry Netten, Douglas Lang, Peter Trotter and Roy Sciascia represented the : school." General Matters A circular from the Wellington ■Education Board, giving particulars of a proposed scheme for closing schools in isolated country areas to enable parents to do shop:ping, was read. The Saturday closing of shops had brought about the situation. Mr. McClune commented that the scheme did not apply to ihe Levin School, and no action was taken by the committee. As a result of discussion, it v.cis decided to make further representations' to the Wellington Education Board on the question of ^school bus routes. The committee hecommended that the Kimberley bus at present operating deviate its route through Roslyn, Arapaepae and Bartholomew Roads to pick up children in the Arapaepae area.
