FORTY-HOUR WEEK FOR NURSES

NEW PLYMOUTH, August 22. "It is my ffnn belief that we shall soon have to face up to the provision of a 40-hour week for nurses," declared tlie chairman of the Taranaki Hospital Board, Mr. P. E. Stainton, at .yesterday's meeting of the board at New Plymoutli. He was convinced that tlie 40hour week should apply as mucli 'to o'iie section of the couimunity as to another. "I don't say it will be possible for us to work a flve-day, 40-hour week, but nurses should be treated the same as anyone else," he said. "Their salaries should be based on 40 hours of work, together with additions for work done in extess of this period as a result of shortage of staff. " Such a step, he said, would be in keeping with the Government's policy for other classes oi employees.
