UNSATISFACTORY SITUATIONS

RU(^rBY UNION'S LETTER TO BOROUGH COUNCIL USE OF LEVIN PARK DOMAIN Unsatisfactory situations which sometimes arise at the Levin Park Domain were recently brought to the notice of the Levin Borough Council by the Horowhenua Rugbyt Union. The union mentioned the changing of locks on the pavilion, the receiving of instructions from different persons regarding play on Saturdays, and sought reconsideration of the decision forbidding the playing of curtain raisers as this would make double representative fixtures very awkward. It also asked permission to admit two ardent supporters of rugby, whowere cripples, to the domain with their cars. At this month's meeting of the council the works committee advised having considered the points raised. It reported as follows: "The town clerk (Mr. H. L. Jenkins) explained the position regarding the admittance of crippled persons with their cars, stating that the St. John Ambulance members on duty at mat'ches always had a key of the main gate in case of emergency. The committee decided to inform the union "that the St. John Ambulance members had a key and they could admit cars to the ground if, in their opinion, such was warranted. "With regard to the question of the changing of the locks on the pavilion, the engineer (Mr. K. W. Sandford) reported that this had been done once at the start of the season. It had been found that 'several keys to the old lock were 'floating round,' and he had decided to change the lock. This had been done and two .keys to the new lock had been handed to the union." Dealing with the question of curtain raisers and play generally in wet weather, the committee's report stated: "It was decided to draw the attention of the union to the fact that these matters had been left for determination to the chairman of the works committee (Cr. Gardiner) and the engineer. The- playing of a curtain raiser on August 17 would be dependent on the state of the weather, but the double match on August 24 was definitely allowable." The Mayor (Mr. H. B. Bur^ekin) said it was right that cripples should be admitted with cars and arrangements had been made to do that. It was hoped the weather would now be drier and that the use of the domain would not damage the turf unduly. The matches at the end of the season, with finals and representative fixtures, were the ones the public wished particularly to see, and it would be a pity if they were not played at the domain, where there was seating accommodation. The engineer (Mr. K. W. Sandford) advised that he had inspected the ground after last Saturday's game and was surprised to See how well the ground had stood up under such wet conditions. Cr. F. E. Parker said the spring growth of grass would strengthen the turf. The council approved the committee's recommendation.
