Egmont on Sunday when a { heavy avalanche of snow fell but a tew yards from where the party was clirnbing. The party was proj ceeding through the Manganui ! ! Gorge when the avalanche fell : without warning. The huge mass of falling snow rumbled down the gorge to about 50 yards below the track normally used by parties of climbers, passing only 20 yards away from the Stratford party. Those threatened had to beat a hasty retreat to avoid being caught. National Meeting To-morrow The National Party's candidate for the Otaki seat will be chosen at a meeting of delegates from all branches in the Otaki electorate, to be held in Otaki at 7 p.m. tomorrow night. Delegates, appointed on the basis of one per twenty financial members of each branch of the pa„rty, will ijhear short addresses by each of the nine nominees, and afterwards vote according to their choice. Members of the party will be present at the meeting, but will have no say ip the final choice of .a candidate, Dele1 gates from each .branch were elected at meetings held last week. Although a great deal of interest will be shown in the outcome of this meeting, there are few people who could aCcurately predict the probable result. Girl's Body at Foot of Cliffs The body of Miss Thelma Jean Beale, aged 23 years, was found at the foot of the cliffs on the New Plymouth foreshore near Woolcombe Terrace, New Plymouth, by a man gathering drift-wood at about 8 a.m. on Sunday. Miss Beale was clad in a nightdress and dressing gown, and as she was seen late • on Saturday evening at the house at which she boards in Courtney Street, it is presumed that the fatality occurred either late on Saturday night or early on Sunday morning. She- retired for the night at about 11 o'clock, Miss Beale was to have been married in the near future; and it is understood that in a letter left by her she indicated that part of her belongings should be given to her fiance.
