STATE ACQUISITION OF COAL MINES

WELLINGTON, Aug. 17. The Prime Minister (Mr. Eraser) stated last night that the Government has no plans for the immediate wholesale acquisition of the privately owned coalmines, and that the announcement in the Budget concerning the nationalisation of mines was purely a statement of policy. Mr. Fraser left this morning by plane for Westport. He gave an assuranee last night that the purpose of his visit was not to buy the Buller mines. The Prime Minister is to be given a eivic reeeption at Westport today, and tomorrow will address meetings of miners. On Monday he will visit sehools and will also receive a deputa- ' tion.
