Flaring up suddeuly into an infemo just after four o'clock this morning a big timber niill in Churchill Btreet, ownedUby Paekei; 'and -Jones, Ltd.-, was destroyed by fire. |Tlie totfil' daniage is estimated at £15,000. Several liouses surrounding tlie mill ( were saved by tlie efforts of tlie Christchurch Fire Bi-igade. Tlie flaines, whieh spouted up to a lieiglit of 50ft within a i'ew niinutes, actually reaclied the back walls of six liouses after burning out tlie sheds in tlie baekyards. Bome residents fought the flaines and beat tlieni with garden lioses and buckcts of water until the liremen got through with t'lie liose leads, and isolated tlie lire*. Tlie flrm's complete sawmilling and boxmalcing plant as ivcll as several timber stacks were ruined. Three motor trucks, wliieh had been parlced in the building, were liardly identiliable. Six back rooms of tlie ofliee and storeroom aiongside the mill were burnt out, and tlie roof caved in on tlie big timber yai'd nearby.
