BRIGABIER AVERY'S EVIDENCE
By Telegraph-
WELLINGTON, Aug. 16. Before the Royal Commission which is enquiring into the acqulsition and sale of used American forces motor vehicles by the Government, Brigadier H. E. Avery, • under cross-examination to-day by Mr. W. E. Leicester, who represents Messrs W. S. Goosman, R. G. Gerard, W. J. Broadfoot and W. A. Sheat, M.P.'s, as members of the public in their private capacity, said his resignation had been the result of his resentment at the police inquiries instituted by the Prime Minister, and implied criticism of the board. Witness went on to say . he had made up his mind that Ax-chibalds, Limited, had overbid as soon as he saw the figure* of £65,252 for the Dodges and Jeeps. It had not been his function to call the Minister's attention to that opinion. There was at that time no question of Archibalds wanting a release from the contract. Knowing that the board would agree, Mr. Levick and himself committed themselves to offering the use of certain plant and a shed to facilitate the clearance of the site.
