Found Drowned Mr. William John Wilson, retired wnarfinger, aged 70 years, residing with his family at Port Chalmers, was found drowned at Muss'el Bay on Wednesday. It is stated he left his bed at 6 o'clock when it was thought that he was going to make tea. When he was subsequently found missing the police were I informed and his body was found on the beach at Mussel Bay. Mr. Wilson was closely connected with sports in Otago. Theft from Ship Four members of the crew of the Mahana were sentenced to 14 days ! gaol by Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M.,.in the Wellington Magistrate's Court, for thefts from the ship's cargo. They were George Albert Charnock, 26, were eorge Albert Charnock, 26, who stole cigarettes and tobacco I valued at £1 10s;-- Charles John Craze, 19, cigarettes valued at £1; Phillip Edward Joyce, whisky valued at 16s 6d; Wfiliam George Sadler, 20, tobacco valued at 7s 6d. Anzac Bay Serviees Concern at the recent decision of the Dominion Executive of the R.S.A. to eliminate Christian elements from the Anzac Day memj orial service, was expressed at the bi-monthly meeting of the Presbytery of Hawke's Bay in Hastings. A resolution stated that the proposed secular ceremonies would be an inadequate substitute for the present Anzac Day serviees which had satisfactorily expressed the feeling and faith of the great buik of the people. The Presbytery advised its ministers that where iccal R.S.A.'s intended to adopt this j alteration, Anzac Day memorial serviees be arranged in co-opera-tion with the Ministers of other churches. Canteen Supplies for Japan About 2500 tons of canteen supplies are to be obtained from New Zealand for the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces in Japan. Colonel W. B. Leonard, director of army canteens for Australia, -who is responsible for the distribution of canteen supplies to all Common- | weaith forces in Japan, is in New j Zealand to finalise details. The present purchases are mainly for the benefit of New Zealand troops who will get biscuits, confectionery, chocolates, tinned foods and beer. Colonel Leonard declined to comment on the administration of the canteen serviees in Japan or on a report that the, J-Force men felt like "poor relations" o'f the Amefican occupation troops. He retuuns to Australia at the week-end. Youths Separated Two youths who were associated in an Auckland burglary, were placed on widely divergent paths when sentenced by Mr. Justice Finlay. One was set on his way to be shipped to United States and the other was committed to the Borstal Institute. They were Edgar Randolph McKinnon, an American : youtfg aged 17, and Patrick Michael O'Connell, aged 19, who both appeared for sentence for breaking and entering. His Honour said McKinnon was due to be deported on Saturday and in view of all the . circumstances he would be convicted and discharged in respect of • the breaking and entering offence. O'Connell, who had also been charged with receiving stolen property, was sentenced to reformative detention for two years at the Borstal Institute. Motorist's Escape ' A Wellington motorist still feels : faint when he thinks of the narrow escape from death or serious j injury he had following the work i of thieves on his car. • During one | night recently, while his car was. I parked opposite his house in MeL-, ; rose, an attempt was made to. remove the wheels, but the thieves ■ were apparently disturbed and left i after they had removed the nuts i and wedges from a rear wheeL The : next morning the motorist left for work. He had to drive- ddwm a- | steep road, with a- hairpin bend, As ; he reached the bend he could feel. : something wrong with, the car. and' ! stopped. The rear wheel was barely on the rim, Another few yards and it would have come off. Had the motorist been travelling fast or had there been passengers in the ; car to put extra weight, on- the | wheel, he thinks nofhing could i have prevented the car from goih'g. { over a steep bank on the- side- of the road.
