HOROWHENUA COLLEGE
ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETS A meeting of the Horowhenua College Advisory Committee was held at the college last night. The chairman (Mr. F. H. Hudson) presided, and also present were Mrs. C. Bartholomew, Messrs. G. Matthew, A. C. Kennerley, E. D. Bell, W. G. Clark and A. Haley (actmgprincipal) . A letter expressing thanks for the sympathy of the committee in her recent bereavement was received from Mrs. W. D. Thomas. The Levin Music Club wrote requesting the use of the" recordings • in the Ramsbotham Bequest Library in order to stage a gramophone concert. Mr. Haley said that it was his desire to see the greatest possible public benefit obtained from the bequest. Permission was granted. Acting Principal's Report The acomg-principai's report was read and adopted. It was (inter alia) as follows: "The roll number on August 1 was 211 boys and 219 .girls. Owing to a great amouiit of sickness, attendances during the last fortnight have been very poor. Mr. Norman Byrne, the first assistant of Wellington Technical College, has been appointed principal of the college. Miss J. Lane and Miss S. Jonathan, who have been relieving in place of the acting-principal and Mr. Calder, will leave at the end of the term to take up permanent positions. Miss Lane has been appointed to Hutt Valley High School and Miss Jonathan to West Christchurch High School. Mr. Andrews from Hawera Technical High School took up his duties on July 8. It is expected that Mr. Calder will commence on October 1. "Two practice wickets are being laid down on the rear grounds. Mr Brash, the new caretaker, commenced duties on July 29. "The annual concert is to be presented on Thursday and Friday of this week. There will be iterm, by the choir, a physical education dispiay, poi dances, a play "and a historical pageant." Referring to the appointment of a new principal, Mr. Hudson said he regretted that Mr. Haley had not been appointed. He was very pleased at the manner in which Mr. Haley had carried out the difficult duties of acting-principal — a very difficult position to fill. Throughout the whole period he had acted as principal he had done his work in a helpful and cordial manner, and it was hoped tnat it would be possible to find an avenue of service for him which would appeal the most. Other members of the committee also expressed their appreciation of Mr. Haley's work. Mr. Haley thanked the committee for its co-operation and its sympathetic attitude, Following a discussion in committee, it was decided to make representations to the Wellington Education Board in regard to the status of the committee where appointments of staff were involved, urging that the present system be changed.
