REFUGEES IN INDONESIA
EVACUATION SUSPENDED Received Tuesday, 11 a.m. BATAVIA, Aug. 12. In a letter to Allied Headquarters, the Indonesian Defence Minister, M. Sjari Fuddin, said the Republican authorities had suspended the evacuation of war prisoners and internees in Central Java beeause the Allies had violated the agreement for the evacuation. He demanded a cessation of provocative acts by the men under Allied command. A spokesman at Allied Headquarters said assurances had been given to the Indonesian Prime Minister, M. Sjahrir, that steps would be taken to avoid unfortunate incidents near the refugee evacuation routes. Efforts were being made to evacuate 1800 former internees, and there was no reason why the other internees should not be the Dutch rather than an Allied responsibility.
