CONTEMPORARY COMPOSERS
LEVIN MUSIC CLUB'S EVENING A most successful and instructive evening was held in the Presbyterian Hall recently by the Levin Music Club. Members and guests were welcomed by tl\e acting president (Mrs. G. Bowers) and the hostesses were Mesdames J. Chapman, H. Easton and M. Smith. The evening was devoted to the works of contemporary composers, and Miss J. Davie read an interesting paper, which covered a wide range of compositions by composers of many nationalities. Her audience felt that it had really learned something worthwhile about contemporary music in all its, phases. The following programme was' presented under the direction of Mrs. Smith: — Pianoforte duet, "Sheep may safely Graze" (Bach, arranged Mary Howe), Misses J. Davie and V. Aim; song, "To a Wild Rose" (Edward McDowell), Mrs. J. Boland; pianoforte solos, "Themes from a Russian Rhapsody" (Edouard Hesselberg) and "Vaise No. 14" (Chopin) , Miss M. Gardner; songs, "Oh Bird of Love Divine" (Haydon Wood) and "Songs My Mother Sang" (Arthur Grimshaw) , Mrs. H. Easton; song, "The English Rose" (Edward German) , Mrs. F. G. Thompsdli; songs, "The Owl" (Liza Lehmann) and "I . Heard You Singing" (Eric Coates) , Miss A. Aim; songs, "Love's Echo" (Ernest Newton) and "The Lord's Prayer" (Moliette), Mrs. C. E. Wiseley; musical monologue, "Bredon Hall" (A. E. Housman), and recitation, "The Listeners" (Walter de la Mare) , Mrs. A. Haley; song, "I See a Tree" (Michael Hodges) , Mrs. I. Taylor.j.'song, • "if. My Songs Were Only Winged" (Reynaldo. Hahnj), Mrs. M. Smith; pianoforte duet, "Witches Dance" (Edward McDowell), Mesdames F. Routley and F. S. Allen.
