AUCKLAND, Augusi n. The New Zealand ltugby League team made football history at Carlaw Park 011 Saturday, by defeating Lnghuid, winner of the Australia Ashes, by 13 points to S in a great wet ground match. Several heavy showers fell during the game but did not detract from the splemlid passing movements. A feature of the game was the great tackling by the New Zealand backs. Every timo England started passing the ball, the inside centres Ward and Knowlden, were pulled down. The crowd was estiinated at 18,000 and staged a won: dert'ul demonstration after the game. The English backs, however, were superior 011 attack and delighted the spectators with clean and clever passing. It was a triumpli for the standard of play by the New Zealand forwards. The set rose to great heights on the nmddy ground and actually had an atlvantage 011 the English pack in Ihe scrums and in the loose.. England fielded ten test players but throughout the llrst half New Zealand had the territorial advantage. England only got in the New Zealand 25 three times in the first half. Midst tense exciteinent Craham followed up fast, snapped up and dived over between the posts. Clarke converted and gave New Zealand a load of five points with the score Newr Zealand 13, England S. The English backs were very clever. Knowjden rau clean through ihe New Zealand backs liut -Tordon got the centre in a great low tackle when a try looked certain. Among the New Zealand backs Robertson and .Tordan f centres j stood out in great low ta''klinn which had a lot to do with the victory. W. R. Clarke ffullbackl gave a great display of fiehh'ng as well as tackling soundly. The forwards Newton, Gillman, Hardwick and Graham played wonderful wet day football. The paek was right up to Ihe best standard seen for vears. Graham 's winning trv was a fine effort. England scored two tries while New Zealand got one.
