RAHUI OUTPOINTED
SHANNON SENIORS WIN On a ground which was a quagmire the Shannon seniors outpointed Rahui by 15 points to nil at Shannon on Saturday. After the recent heavy rain there was much water lying on the field The early game cut the ground to pieces, and when the seniors commenced to play the field was a sea of mud. In spite of this handicap the resulting game was quite interesting to watch. Pressing hard on one or two occasions, Rahui fought a jhard game against a better team. j For the home side credit must be given Doug. Fuller, who besides playing good foothall, was responsible for adding the extra points to all of Shannon's three tries. This player is now in good form and is worthy of a place in bigger j football. Doug. Aitchison played j good football and the newcomer, j Peni, piayed very well. Stan Chester, as usual turned in a good steady game. This player should also make bigger football in the ■near future. However, the player jwho outshone the field was Colin I Mortimer, who seems to be back to Ais old form again. Mortimer outplayed his opponents with ease, his handling was good and his strategy excellent. He opened up many goou moves in the offensive and his sound defence saved his team on more than one occasion. Mortimer is without a doubt among the best backs in the union to-day, and had he struck this form earlier in ine season he would have been playing on Athletic Park next Saturday. The teams that tooh the field were as follows: — Rahui: Lindsay, Stackhouse, Duncan, Webster, Jones, Dobson. O'Brien, A. Stevenson, Bailey, ?. Webster, Eabs, L. Stevenson, Ramsoottom and Branch. Shannon : Ellison, Rolston, Rauhihi, E. Chester, C. Peni, N. Callesen, Campbell, Robertson, Pigott, Mortimer, Aitchison, S. Chester, Fuller, Gadsby and Pederson. From the opening whistle the • home team went on the attack. Mortimer brought play into Ihe visitor's twenty-five, and in about three minutes the home side were over Rahui 's line eompelling them Lo force. From the drop-out play centred around half-way for some tirne, when a kick found touch on Shannon's twenty-five yard line. Getting the ball from the lineout, Shannon oroke down field, but , a pass to Chester was knocked on and a scrum went down in the centre of the field. Rahui pressed mto Shannon's territory, tne ball going into touch on the home side's iive-yard line. The visitors' secur.d the baii from the line-out and pressed hard on the Shannon line, oompeiling them to force. Soon after the drop-out the home team were awarded a free kick, which brought play to half way. ^Aitchison opened the attack which brought the ball to the visitors' line, and foliowing rucking play on che goai-iine Rahui forced. Play was soon - back " into Rahui ground and / Peni .* opened a passing rush, which " allbwed Mortimer to' cut infield and go over to draw first points of the game. Fuller had no crouble in sending the ball over the crossbar for the extra points. Shannon 5, Rahui 0. Rahui opened the attack after the kick-off and were up on the home line within a matter of seconds. However, they were over anxious and a hard kick sent the ball dead. Play remained in Shannon's ground with line-outs and scrums coming fast. An infringement gave the home side "a" free ilek, which brought play into the visitors' territory. Rahui sent the ball back to Aitchison, who kicked infield to Mortimer, and he was taken in possession on the . halfway line. Rahui again pressed to the Shannon line, but Campbell, coming through with the ball at his toe, cleared for the home side. From a scrum on the twenty-five, Mortimer brought play to haif-way. A scrum resulted in Shannon being given a free kick, Fuller taking a kick at goal, but it fell short. Foliowing up fast, the Shannon backs were set in motion by Aitchison, who cut infield and passed over to Mortimer, who -in, turn sent the ball on to S. Chester, and he went over for a handy. try. Fuller converted with a nice kick. Shannon 10, Rahui 0. Half-time sounded soon after with play in mid-fieid and the score unchanged. Soon after the opening of the second half Shannon were again on the Rahui line. Rahui cleared and a knock-on resulted in a scrum going down on the visitors' twentyfive line. Shannon secured the ball from the scrum and Aitchison kicked infield to Mortimer, who knocked on. Rahui obtained the ball from the scrum and • kicked hard downfield, and Pedersen was nicely taken in possession. Rucking play took place near the Shannon line and a free kick cleared for the home side. Play returned to the Shannon line, but Pedersen
fieared with a good kick which Zound touch between the twentyfive and half-way flags. Play .noved to Rahui ground. where Mortimer kicked over Duncan's uead to bring the game to the visitors' ten-yard line. Rahui cleared md from off-side play on the .wenty-five Shannon were given a free kick, with Fuller taking a shot ; at goai.
