Three Men Recaptured Forcing their way through a small lavatory window, three men escaped from Dunedin prison shortly after 7.30 o'clock yesterday morning. They were Louis James Egen, aged 20, James Robert Miller, aged 25, and David Mervyn Coats, aged 19. They had only a brief period of liberty, being recaptured at 12.15 in a house in the hill suburb of Roslyn. They were taken by surprise and oifered no resistance. Mayor to Present Trophies At the social evening arranged by the Levin Combined Amateur Athletic and Cvclihg Club, to be held in the Druids' Hall this evening, trophies will be presented by His Worship the Mayor (Mr. H. B. Burdekin) . Winners of the various events during the season wiil receive cups, while a rose bowl is held by the successful competitor in the senior cycle event. Local talent will provide a variety of items, and all that is needed is a good attendance of the publib to make this oue of the most enjoyable evenings held in Levin this winter. Missing Pig Hunter Search parties have so far failed to find the 65-year-old pig hunter, Mr. C. B. Holloway, who has bfeen missing in the bush north-east of Mangapehi for more than a week. When he did not return a .party set out to look for him. After combing. the area extensively they found the remains of a pig which the hunter is believed to have killed and usea for food. Last Tuesday the searehers tracked Mr. Holloway many miles through the bush, but they lost his tracks in the scrub-covered waste known , as tne Taparoa Plains. The search continued unavailing throughout the rest of the week and over the week-end. Farmer Loses Life While crossing in a sailing dinghy on Saturday afternoon from Matauri Bay, on the east coast between the Bay of Islands and Whangaroa Harbour, to the Cavilli Islands, a farmer lost his life when the dinghy capsized. He was Mr. Walter Samuels, aged 34, married, of Matauri Bay. Mr. Samuels, with a youth, was taking a dinghy laden with barbed wire from the mainland at Matauri Bay to a farm on the Cavilli Islands, a few miles off the coast. There was a strong wind blowing off-shore and clear- of the land a sea was running. Sail was set and the dinghy was well away from the land when it was caught by a squall and capsized. Big Fish Recorded weights of some of the finer fish takes in the Rotorua and Taupo areas are given in the annual report of the Department of Internal Affairs, presented in the House of Representatives. In the Taupo area, it is stated, four fish of 121b. were taken, two of 1111b., seven of 111b., and five of 101b. One fish of 111-lb. was taken in the Rotorua area, other good fi.sh being one of 111b. and four of 101b. Hot, dry weather during the latter part of the season had a detrimental effect on both the sport and the condition of the -fish in the Taupo region, and the longcontinued eruption of Mount Ruapehu and the resulting deposit oi volcanic silt in the Tongariro kiver and its tributaries also had a detrimental effect on fish and fishing, states the report. Mail Service to Japan The Australian and New Zealand troops of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan, are to have a faster airmail service, states the. official news service. In the past, outward mail from Australia has frequently been held up at Morotai, but under a new management, the junction of mail planes has been switched from Morotai to Darwin, to enable mails to be flown from Melbourne in one day to connect with the thriceweekly service to Japan. The New Zealanders will receive a more f-requent service under the new plan. Instead of being carried by a special weekly service operated by the R.N.Z.A.F., their mail will be sent to Melbourne by the TransTasman service, to connect with the Darwin thrice-weekly service. The returning route will be the same. N'
Motor-Cyclist Injured When the motor-cycle he was riding was involved in a collision with a truck at the junction of the Palmerston North-Foxton highway and 'the sideroad to the Municipal Abattoirs at Awapuni at 4.25 p.m. yesterday, Arthur George Steggles, meat grader, of Nathan Place, receive'd a broken right arm. The driver of the truck was Michael Joseph Kriven, storekeeper and mail contractor, of Rewa.
