MR. CHARLES EDWARD STONE

Another link with Otaki's past has been broken with the passing away on August 1. at the Palmerston North Hospital, of Mr. Charles Edward Stone at the age of 79 years. The late Mr. Stone, who had resided at Otaki Railway for the past 30 years, was born at Wolverton, Northampton, Bucks, in 1867, and at the age of seven came to New Zealand with his parents and brother, his father_ taking -up a position as a traffic manager with the New Zealand Railways. Mr. Stone was educated at Nelson College and later spent four years in Melbourne, where he studied architecture and draughtsmanship. He then joined the staff of the Wellington City Engineer's Department, holding. a responsible position for over 25 years. Owing to the early death of hi.s "wife in 1915, the late Mr. Stone left Wellington and settled 4n Otaki, i taking up small fruit - and vioiet i growmg. The deceased who was of a rctiring nature and a highlyrespected resident oi Otaki, was always very loyal to the town of nis adoption. Hfe' maintained' that It possessed the finest climate in New Zealand. Mr. Stone is survived by an only brother, Mr. G. W-. Stone, of" Otaki Beach, and' two* sons, Frank and Harry, of Wellington. Two sons who predeceased him were Jack and Noel, who were killed in action in 1942, and an only daughter, Lucy, who as k nurse was killed in the Napier earthquake of 1931.
