The ' grocery establishments reported a very busy day due to the commencement oi the new rationing period. Parcels Welcomed A letter was received in Shannon last week from a recipient of one of the Presbyterian Church food parcels recentiy sent to Britain. The .contents, which included tinned goods, fat and soap, was most enthusiastically welcomed in England. It is indeed heartenhig. to those people . of Britain to realise ihat their elforts during the yeaiv of war are not forgotteh by the people of New Zealand. Foxton Races News that the Foxton Racing Club v/ill be holding its meeting on the Foxton course at tne .epd of the ■ month has been received fawourably in Shannon. In past years t.ne ' Foxton races have always been a popular function with ' local ' sportsmen and other citizens- in Shannon, who just go along for the day out. Subject to favourable weather prevailing, Shannon will have a large representation at :the ( Foxton meeting. 1 Kiwi Match Popular With no footbali played localiy over the week-end, local followers of rugby concentrated on the Kiwi-Weiiington match. The bus : which ran from Shannon on Saturday was booked out eariy in the week and those less fortunate had to be content to hear the broadcast iof the game. Other local sports- ! men journeyed to Wanganui to see : the league match between Welllng- ! ton and Taranaki played on Saityjrday. ■ Iuiluenza Epideraic t The influenza germ has been making itself felt in Shannon dur- ! ing the past, few weeks. Almost ; every day some new victim is confined to bed with the customary bottle of quinine and a hot water ■ bottle. With the recent cold weather common colds are often neglected, with the result that an. epidemic of influenza has broken i out. The recent epidemic of mumps seems to have subsided considerably during the last week ior so.
