Work on Rimutaka Tunnel
"Possibly in two mofithS' time," was the commencement date given by the Minister of Works (Mr. iSemple) for the Rimutaka tunnel project, when outlining plans for the Upper Hutt area in an address at Silverstream. In all' probability, work would be started this year. Land near Lake Wairarapa had already^ been surveyed; it was ready for development, and would be the future market garden for Wellington. The tunnel would bring Featherston within 20 min1 utes of Upper Hutt.
