TO GIVE THEM A TASTE OF NEW ZEALAND
AUCKLAND, August 4. As the result of a plan now being put into efi'eet by the authorities, the 5000 New Zealanders in the New Zealaud Brigade in Japan will shortly be able to obtain provisions from their own country in their eamp eanteens. On a uiission to pureliase supplies,. the Directof of ■ Army GafitO'eus,..dii;..v Australia, CotoneL W»'D.,.Leouard, 'li'as-ar-.-rived jby/aiif frpmi Syfiney; 'Hijherto no such. prbvisionh have been sent direct from XTew Zealand but all have gone from Au.stralia with. the exception of tobacco and cigarettes which have been supplied from England. Colonel Leonard said he hoped to proeure here ehocolates, biscuits, tinned foods, New Zealand beer and toheroas. The idea ,was to let New Zealanders have a taste of something from their homeland. This, of eourse, had uothing to do with the .regular Army rations but was for stoeking eanteens. A ship would be sent from Australia about the end of September to load these and other Army supplies. During his visit to New Zealand Colonel Leonard will also endeavour to arrange for supplies of elothing for inale eivilians in Japan attaehed to the diplomatic staffs, and for wives and children of soldiers of all the British forces. He will leave for the south on Thursday.
