The death has occurred of Etheldreds Lewis, who wrote the story of Trader Horn. Mr. W. P. Russell, of Palmerston North, has been appointed handicapper to the Manawatu Racing; Club. .. ; • Miss Evelyn Pilcher, of Wellington, has been the guest of her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Evans, of Buller Road. Mrs. P. Webster, of Palmerston North, is spending the week-end with Mrs. John Ryder, of Bath Street.
Sir Henry Turner, formerly closely connected with the New Zealand meat trade and now Director of Meat and Livestock in the Ministry of Food, is at present in the Argentine. On behalf of the British Gove'rnment, he is negotiating with the Argentine Government on meat supplies and prices. A link of over half a century with this district was broken with tue death of Mr. Niels Andrew Anderson, which occurred at his residence in Bath Street on Thursday. The late "Mr. Ailderson, who was in his 94th year, was born in Denmark. He came to New Zealand some 72 years ago, and with the exception of two visits to Denmark has resided in thc Dominion ever since. Hb had lived in Levin for the past 50 years, and prior to that was at Manakau, where he was occupied as a blacksmith. Despite his advanced age, the late Mr. Anderson remained very active up to quite recently. He is survived by his widow.
