MAORI CHURCH BOARD

REV. P. TEMUERA'S HEALTH At the annual meeting of the Maori Church Board, the Rev. P. Temuera said he had little to report as far as his pastoratn was concerned, for things were as usual and there was nothing outstanding. He felt that the time was ripe fcr placing a younger man to take up his work, as he found the constant strain telling on his health. His pastorate had failed in its assessment, but it was not due to failure on the part of his parisliioners. It was due mainly to his poor health. "I am fully prepaved to make way for a younger man, and to act if necessary as his assistant," he said. Future of Two Races The Bishop of Aotearoa congrauilated Mr. Temuera in presenting a well-prepared paper, which was certainly provocative, and likely to stir up a fair amount of feeling. Attempts to combine the two races in one pakeha church had never proved successful. "I have the blood of both races in my veins and I am completely at home in each," said the Bishop. "It would be dangerous to the future of the Anglican Church among the Maori peonle even to suggest that the time has come for giving up our own characteristics as a race and merging completely with the pakeha. The Maori laiiguage is one of God's most beautiful . gifts to the world. And He has given many other beautiful gifts to the Maori people. Let us treasure these gifts and develop them to further enrich the spiritual Kingdom." Moved by the Rev. M. A. Bennett, seconded by the Rev. P. Temuera and carried, "That this Hinota of the Wellington Diocese desires to express its gratitude for the help given by the Diocese of Waiapu in supplying clergy to work in the Diocese, and would welcome closer co-operation between the Maori people of the two diocese." Vicarage fpr Otaki Moved by Mr. Durie, seconded by the Archdeacon of Wairarapa, and carried: — "That the Maori Mission Committee be urged to consider the erection of a vicarage on the old mission site at Otaki at the earliest opportunity."
