MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TIED UP ARCHRISHOP'S STAND
(Special — ^From
WELLINGTON, This Day. Word has just been received from ' .America tt(at three hig Hollywood productiohs have been denounced as the "Unholy Timee"^ by the Catholic Archbishop oflNew Orleans. They are "Gilda," starring Rita Ha,yworth, "Kitty," starring Pauletvte Goddard, and "The Outlaw," starring newcomer Jane Russell. The Archbishop said he. had seen the publicity for "Gilda" and "it sizzles." He had not se'en the pic-" ture but read a "Time" revieiv of it, which said: "It is Rita Hayworth's business to portray a woman as bad as she is beautiful. On the reb,o,u,nd from a young bum she marries' an ei'egant bounder. She then spepds^a large part of the picture acting as' much like a nympholept as the traffic will bear, and sinee all this transpires in Buenos Aires, the traffic is reasonably 'lively. All this senseless sinning makes for a fair' amount of pulpy entertainment." "Kitty" was chosen as "Life's" movie of the week. It is a sort of "Forever Amber," with Paulette Goddard cast as an 18th century guttersnipe, who is hired by famous Gainsborough as a model. Settihgs and clothes are inconceivably luxurious and elegant. Stars swill gin and port in the abandoned fashion of that drunken era, and Miss Goddard struggles hard with a cockney accent and 26. changes of costume. Based on the life of Billy the Kid, Howard Hughes' film "The Outlaw," has run into all sorts of trouble. It had its world premiere in 1943, and was withdrawn by the police. It was re-issued in San Francisco this year, and the police stopped it again under a .code which permits them to ban films "which excite lewd or vicious thoughts." The Motion Picture Producers' Association has "c'alled Hughes to account for the overdisplay of Jane Russell's curves. Hollywood is very worried about the Archbishop's denunciation. Millions of dollars are" tied up in these three productions. Overtures have been made to His Grace to reconsider his verdict on the films with the promise to remodel them in places. So far they st'and as "The Unholy Three."
