MR. A. S. MACFARLANE

Levin lost yet another of its early citizens recently, When Mr. Archibald Stewart Macfarlane died in the Palmerston North Hospital at the age of 64 years. The late Mr. Macfarlane was born at Struan, Perthshire, Scotland, and erriigrated to AUstralia in 1900. He worked there for a few years in the sugar cane plahtations, and when that industry sUffered a severe setback from a drought, came to New Zealand and settled in the LeVin district, where he has resided ever since. He was ehgaged in farm work for a number of years until 1915, when he began business as a carrier. Mr. Macfarlane was interested actively in this,. business until his retirement four years ago. He also ehgaged in farming oh his oWn account. Perhaps Mr. Macfarlane's greatest interest was in the Horowhenua A, and P. Association, and it has been said that he was the keenest supporter the association ever had. He never counted the cost to himself, or the labour, in anything he did for it. A meihber of the executive for over 20 years, his main interest was in the horse section. of which he was a steward during the whole of his period of service on the committee. He also exhibited consistently with heavy horse teams, and was a member of both the Horowhenua Jersey Cattle Breeders' Club and the Ayrshire Breeders' Club. Mr. Macfarlane had a life-long friendship with Mr. Ernie Hudson. He was married in Levin 41 years ago, and is survived by his widow and two adult daughters, Grace and Nari. The funeral was held at Levin yesterday. The Rev. A. Salmond conducted the services and the pallbearers were Messrs. J. and W. Leslie, G. E. Lee, F. T. Woollett, A. O. Woollett and W. Urquhart. The Horowhenua Highland Pipe Band played during the service, a fitting reminder of the late Mr. Macfarlane's association with the Horowhenua Scottish Society.
