NICHOLSON CUP COMPETITION
E. W. CLARK'S FINE ROUND " Weather conditions were again at t-heir worst on Saturday after - noon Whpn' the third f blind of the Nicholson Cup competition was played by the Levin Golf Club. Soon after the commencement of play, steady rain set in and all competitors spent a most unenviable time when playing their round. Four players, however, suej ceeded in playing below their handicaps. E. W. Clark, with a splendid round of 72 off the stick, won both gross and nett rounds for play in the medal round, a sweepstake which is run in con- | junction with the cup fixture. | Following closely on the heels of ! the successful player were J. 3. i Tomlinson, R. A. Frederikson and j S. C. Franklin, the runners-up, ; who had only one point separating J their respective scores. j The following are the scores of I players who handed in cards: E. Next Satuvday's Fixture The annual matcn for the president's trophy was scheduied for piay on Saturaay ai'cernoon next, but owing to the footbali match, Kiwis v. Next Saturday, the i game scheduied for August 10, a ' four ball best ball bogey, will be ' played, the draw taking place at ! 1.5 p.m. from the ciubhouse. Club Notes Some fifty' men . members were j present over the week-end and , despite the lieavy rain, more than. i half th'e players completed their ; fnll round of play, surely a definite I proof of keenness. With the grad- ( ual lengthening of the daylight • hours, it is hoped that better play- . ling conditions will be experienced, J and as there are still another three j months left for cfficial winter play , it is also hoped that many more; j competitions will be • able to bej j played for before finalising. a most , interesting and varied season of; golf. All club competitions, par- j ticularly in championship and j | handicap fixtures, have been j played well up to schedule, and this fact will no doubt prove bene- ! ficial to all contestants when thel
I i more varied matches are arranged. i The first round in the club J championships in both grades | provided only one surprise result, : uhis being in the. senior grade, j when A. I. Saunders eliminated E. i W. Clark by the narrow margin of : one up. As the latter has been a ; nnalist in club championship play for many years, Saunders' wm was well mented. However, he failed to retain his good form on the fol- ; towing day, when he also was ' eliminated by D. C. Hill by a five :and four margin, the latter having ; oeen taken to the last green in his ; first round of play by H. Bull. The former club champion, W. G. Clark, also only narrowly passed mto the second round of play by a margin of one up, W. Groombridge fighting back in a hard game. D. P. Todd and E. J. Watts had a strenuous match, the latter winning on the last green after being three down for most of the journey. S. C. Franklin, J. N. Sams and O. C. Lagor all had fairly comfortable wins on their first round , games, and a retaining of form by these players will see the other successful first rounders faced with no easy task in eliminating chem. A player in the junior grade, : O. B. Brown, who qualified top in che eventual rounds for play, has had the misfortune to have to forfeit his right to compete in all his games, both in the junior championship and ,the two handicap fixtures, owing to medical treatment. As this player was right at the peak of his form, his omission will make the junior grade more open, and the eventual win- 1 ner is as yet closely concealed as a i I result of the first round's play. In the top half of the draw, H. W. S. , I Walker and J. S- Tomlinson, aftei j ! having comfortable wins from W. j H. Walker and O. B.""'Browh i tdefault), provided a highlight lasl week-end when they staged a ; battle royal to finish on the 19th green, Walker winning. In the { middle group, M. C. Wilson, II ; Black, L. S. Carmichael and F. E. j Langelan all ^passed into the sec- j ond round through consistent play. j and in the bottom half, S. F. ! Atkins, who is playing very souna j golf, has advanced to the semi- j finals. The keenness of all playen i in the junior grade has been" most marked, and the eventual winner is going to have no easy path tc i the highest honour the club provides in this section. '
