ROCKETS TO ASCEND 500 MILES ABOVE EARTH
Eeceived Monday, 9 p.m. NEW YOEK, July 28. Several score of giant rockets, including some designed to ascend substantially higlier than tbe Nazi V2, will be built for the Army and Air Force to ascertain eonditions in the upper atmosphere, states the Associated Press. Contracts are planned fol* the manufactnre of a hundred rockets capable of rising 130 miles and costing 2,000,000 dollars. They are expected to be ready by the outumxi of 1947. Eesearch otficials state these rockets will be strictly for scientific purposes, carrying instruments to collect data on cosmic rays, atmosphere j pressnre and temperatures. Later on ! a further efl'ort will be made to explore the ionosphere with a whole family of guided missiles, including one capable of rising 500 miles above the earth with a 500-pound load.
