TAKING OF TOHEROAS
♦— — — RFVISION OF REGULATIONS A revised set of regulations covering the taking of toheroas, and setting out the terms of llcenses and leases of areas for canrimg purposes, has been made by Order-in-Council on July 10. The regulations will be known as the "Toheroa Regulations, 1946." Among the restrictions on taking toheroa are a few which local people should know. For instance, it is illegal to take, or assist totake, or have in possession a 'toheroa with a shell less than three inches in length. Toheroa cannot be taken wijfii a metal implement 'of any kind. It is also forbicTden to use a fork, or any spade, shovel or similar tool with a blade width of over four inches. It is unlawful to open toheroa in any place below high water mark. No toheroa can be taken during the months of October and November. These regulations apply to persons taking toheroa other than holders of special licenses. The limits for the number of toheroa that may be taken in a. single day are that no person other than a Maori taking toheroa for the consumption by Maoris shall take more than twenty and more than fifty in one vehicle. A Maori taking tohera for consumption by Maoris . cannot take more than flfty in one day. However, in parts of North Auckland it is legal for a Maori to take up to 200, with the permission of an Inspector of Sea Fishing. No one is permitted to take toheroa for sale unless hd is the holder of a toheroa license, which is a fisherman's license with special provision for toheroa.
