GOOD SERVICE RENDERED

The Horowhenua Rugby Referees' Association is to be congratulated on the referees it has selected to officiate at games this : season. They have shown a good knowledge of the rules and ' an - ability to interpret them well. Complaints have been few and far between. . , . . A wcrd of praise niust also be given to members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, who have attended matches throughout the whole district in whatever the weather. The service these voluntary workers. have rendered has been appreciated by the players.

I'ume ho popular in Hh tour oversoas. j The winning of the mateh was only nj seeondary eonsideration witli the tourists who took all sorts of risks. They reeeived a great ovation from the crowd and as they rau on Ihe field | the Auckland teain gave theiu three choers which were repeated before the kick-off. In the first 20 minutes of tlie game the Kiwis gave a real taste of their eapabilities and were 12 points to the good. During this period they j played some dazzling rugby which would have done credit to any Al! Blaek team. Their snappy and reverse passing with quick clianges of direction, had the defence nonplussed. As far as winning the game was coneerned tlus Kiwis had it won during tlus period tf they had cared to play safely after - wards. Half way through the first spell the Jack Of lituess of the touring players j after a spell of tlirec uionths, becanie apparent and they looked a beaten jteani. However, thev rallied splendidly, the forwards especially halfway j through the second spell. The Kiwis I 'had the monopoly of tlie ball from the j scrums in tlie first. half and the Auckland defence was severely tested. j The Auckland team deserves great [credit for their line displav. They were ! quick to take advantage of the Kiwis' lerrors and backe'd^up well. It was obI vious, however, that if the Kiwis had I been litter some of tlie errors would have been eorrected. It, was pleasing to note an all round iiuprovement in the play of the Auckland forwards. They kept togetlier and packed mueli better, while their lineout work comI pared favourably with that 'of the opposition in most instances. Tries for the Iviwis were scored by Allen and Ingpen. Scott converted ; both and kicked two penalty goals. 'Allen 'also potted a goal. For Auckland Duini (2), Johnson, Sorenson and Graee scored tries. Edwards converted one and Sorenson j kicked a penalty goal.
