SIX CHILDREN SAVED FROM BURNING HOUSE
By Telegrciph-
WAIROA, July 22. A display of coolness and presence of mind by a young girl, Joy Brown, eleven years of age, probably saved the lives of several young children, when fire broke out at the residence of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Barney Brown, of Mahia Peninsular, at two o'clock on Saturday morning. Joy, who was sleeping with six other children in a whare, six feet from the house, was awakened by lalling bottles to find the home in flames. She first took her young brother of about 18 months to safety. She then returned and endeavoured to waken a second boy, but failing to do so, carried him out and then went back to bring the four others to safety. In doing so, her night clothes caught fire, but she tore a burning sleeve from her dressing gown and carried on, making the children as comfortable as possible in the open. Both the house and whare were totally destroyed. The parents were absent at the time and the nearest neighbour to the scene lives half a mile away.
