NOTES ON AWAPUNI MEETING

(By

High Order's win from Ganges in the Manawatu Handicap last Saturday surprised many punters, who iet hirn go out ninth favourite in a field of fifteen. Although he has not a very bright winning record in nearly every case he has paid a good dividend. By Ninth Duke from Mundane, High Order is a three-year-old geiding. He began his racing as a uwo-year-old, but scored only one win in three starts, so that he received little publicity. At the beginning of this season he ran second in a nine furlong event at Marlborough, and on the second day of the meeting narrowly won in a three horse race over 11 miles. When he turned out for a hack nfile on the second day of the Trentham March meeting, it was not surprising to see him sent out as twelth favourite in a field of twelve. However, he just romped home, and of course paid his supporters handsomely. After this i success he reverted to shorter disj tances without success, and when he started in the Rere Nikiteni Memorial Stakes at Otaki last May he was again, all but one, the outsider. Once again his supporters I were rewarded for their opuimism. i Running second to Silver Rod, ne was awarded the race on protest. ! Before last Saturday-ts win, High | Order had four starts for only one i place — a third to Imperial in the i Manawatu Winter Cup. By his win j on Saturday he showed that he j relishes the soft going, and that he | is a good pace horse. He is likely i to have more success in handicap events before the end of tne sea- : son, and he has the makings of a ' good horse. High Order is owned by Mr. D. J. ! Barlow, and is trained at Trentham : by P. Burgess. Flying Tor Ran Well Flying Tor ran well enough in the Manawatu Handicap to suggest ■ that he is near form. He carried ; his burden of 9st. 131bs. into a • fourth place admirably. It would be wise to watch this Leighon geiding. Rohioff's three mounts last SatI urday, Indian Sign, Hign Morale j and Abdicate rewarded him with one win and two seconds. This is quite an achievement, as it is more difficult to ride horses over hurdles than it is on the flat. ; Red Glare's 12st. 41bs. told on ; him with about half a mile to go, i and although he finished last, his effort was quite creditable. The Rocket geiding may collect another prize or two this season, as he is one of the most improved jumpers j of the season. Sergeant Jack Responded The locally-trained and _ owned Sergeant Jack put up a good performance to run third to Persuade j in the Electric Handicap. Thc I Commandant geiding was always handy and responded readily wnen ' asked for an effort in the straight. Consistency Rewarded j Consistency rewarded The Mon- . arch with the Winter Hurdles, and | his win showed that this jumper | has class. The Croupier geiding in ' his last six starts has secured four j wins, one second and one unplaced. I About two years ago this horse was I in such bad condition that it was said he would never race again, but under the careful eye of owner-trainer H. B. Lorigan, The Monarch became a success. If caken to the Grand National Meeting he should do well. Ganges Improves Ganges showed improvement in ;,he Manawatu Handicap by running second to High Order. A i renowned mud-lark, Ganges was [ oue of the finds of last season, and niis was his first attempt at a j .niddle distance event. High Morale Promising I Although it is not very well | xnown, High Morale, who ran secI ond to Golden Tide in the Hack j ooeepies, won the Trentham j I-Iuraies in 1944 from Young | Charles and Authoress. Since : ohen he has been turned out until ohis season. His effort last Saturday was promising. High Morale is l an aged geiding by Bulandshar ! from Kacant, and is at home in tnc , ; soft going. First Class Win The hot favourite, Soneri, ricl- ! den by W. J. Broughton, registered her first win in open company by i defeating a strong challenge from ihe top weight, Ramicourt, in the i Members' Handicap. She is a threei year-old mare by Bulandshar from j Lady Lyric, and is trained at Otaki 1 by D. J. Burgess. It was a first ciass win, and she should command ; t attention in the Winter Cup at the j Grand National meeting nexl month. Most Successful Sire : Bulandshar was the most suc- 1 cessful sire at the recent Awapuni I meeting. He sired two winners, ; Indian Sign, winner of the July Steeples, and Soneri, winner of the Members' Handicap. He also sired two seconds, in High Morale and Ganges. Bulandshar has proved himself a successful sire of jump- i ers, and is also well represented oii the flat. It is interesting to note chat most of his stock can handle a soft going track.
