MAGISTRATE'S COURT

MONTHLY SITTING IN LEVIN The montfily sitting of the Magistrate's Court was held at Levin, yesterday, when Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M., presided. The following cases were dealt with:— Licensing Breaches Ernest Frederick Ward (Mr. D. P. Todd) was charged (a) that he did allow liquor to be removed from licensed premises at a time when such premises were required to be closed, and (b) that at a time when licensed premises are required to be closed he did sell liquor on such premises. The defendant pleaded guilty on both qharges. Sergeant W. Grainger stated &hat at about 10 p.m. on June 15 iast 'he, along with Constable Giliespie, saw two men coming out of the main entrance of the Lpvin Hotel, and accosting them found them in the possession of six bottles of beer. Counsel for the defence said that ihe licensee had been 'phoned with a request to supply the liquor, and had complied. There was no suggestion of selling in the bar. He submitted the case was an isolated 3ne, and recent reports had been xavourable upon the conduct of the hotel. , On each charge the defendapt was convicted and fined £10, with costs of 16s and 10s respectively. Offensive Behaviour Eric Irwin, charged with casting offensive matter on a public street, was convicted and fined £2, with court costs 10s. Failure to Register Neils Oliver Peterson was charged that, being an alien, he did fail to register. He paid a penalty of £1, with 10s costs.

Prohibition Order Breach A breach of a prohibition order by Dennis Claude Hart resulted in a conviction being entered, and a fine being imposed amounting to £2, with 10s costs. Traffic Breaches P. F. Watts and Son (Mr. N. M. Thomson) were charged with operating a motor bus carrying a load of passengers in excess of the number permitted by the certificate of fit--ness, and in excess of the number permitted in the class for which ficense fees were paid. A convicion was entered in each case with \ fine of £2 10s and costs 10s. Daniel Martin, charged with driving a truck at an excessive speed, was convicted and fined £3, .vith costs 12s. Keith Ian Christensen was charged (a) with riding a motor cycle without being in possession of a warrant of fitness; (h) without laving a driver's license; and (c) A'ithout having an effective ;ilencer attached. On each chargvi i conviction was entered with cespective fines of 15s, 30s and 10s, ■vith costs of 10s in each instance. Charged with driving a motor /ehicle without due • care and •attention, George David Saunders Harris was convicted and fined £1, with costs 10s. Frederick Edward Davis, charged (a) with driving at an excessive ipeed, and (b) with passing mother vehicle without sufficient /isibility, was on each charge fined 72 10s. with costs 10s.
