Championship Play The three qualifying rounds for positional play in the club championships have now been finalised and after many keen tussles to eventually qualify, .the successful contestants are shown below. The automatic draw has been used for both senior and junior grades and many keen matches should eventuate before the club champions are

found for the present season's play. This will be the first club championship played since 1939, when they were abandoned for the duration of the war. The following is the draw for senior and junior grades: — , Senior: W. G. Clark v. W. Groombridge, C. R. Hosie v. D. E. Clark, M. R. Smith v. S. C. Franklin, C. D. Melville v. J. N. Sams, E.j J. Watts v. D. P. Todd, O. C. Lagor1 v. C. Wallace, D. C. Hill v. H. Bull and A. Saunders v. E. W. Clark. ! Juniors: O. B. Brown v. J. S.. Tomlinson. W. H. Walker v. H. W. S Walker, J. Todd v. M. C. Cups Most players since the opening rounds of play in the above competitions have abided by the match committee's rulings regarding 'time for completion of their respective matches at a seheduled date. However, a few players have erred in' the above respect and the match committee has had no option but to use the scratching pen." The' rounds have now been fully made up to date and the third round of play in both competitions is set down for the week-end of July 21. Any player failing to play his next round by the above date will be scratched in accordance with the match committee's rulings. Next Saturday's Match A stapleford bogey match is seheduled to take place on Satur-, day afternoon next, the draw ta"king place at 1.5 p.m. from the clubhouse. Any player who has not, participated in such a competition before is asked to make himself ■ conversant with rulings for such : play before commencing his round of play, thus saving undue delay in checking his round at the com- ; pletion of play. i Club Doings Golfers are indeea "f or tunat'e in many ways regarding play on the; local links, not only ofi'' the present ] season's play, which has been Der- I

feet from all angles, but also in regard to the weather which rare- ; ly enforces an abandonment of , play. However, golf is to the major- ^ lty a winter game, and the vagaries of the weather are really only. a secondary consideration when the game is played seriousiy. Thegame suifered a setback at the commencement of hosuilities and even to-day it has not yet had the chance of assuming the possibiliuies that wiii no doubt occur oefore'many years pass. The sup- | ply of baiis has been for some | uime a detrimenfc to the game s I advancement, buu over the last few ! moxxuxxs suppiies from overseas have j been coming to hana. Tne pure ruboer ball shouid soon again be 'on the market and, together with ; added suppiies of new clubs, the 1 outiook ior a boom period in the : pxaying arena seems to loom ^ngxiixy. With these prospects the game, locaily and elsewhere is one, , !xn that all clubs should enjoy a larger membership than they have • oeen accustomed to. Uninterrupt- : ed play is a question that many 'club committees will have to face at no distant date. An interesting comparison of increased memberohip figures to bear out the expan•sion oi golf locaily shows that the local club has a membership of approximateiy 150 players, which is nearly a 50 per cent. rise on last- . year. With the season more than • ; ixair-way advanced, appiications ; ior membership are still being received by the committee, and if the membership still shows signs of fincreasing the committee will have no option but to declare the mem- . ibership closed for an indefinite* period. This is a step that is ■ always against any sporting body's wish, and it is to be hoped that tnis may never occur locaily. Locai golfing committees have always been renowned for uxeir club enthusiasm and this was shown when the subject of additionai playing areas was mentioned at the last general meeting of the ciub committee. A sub-committee was appointed to make arrangements to view several prospective sites should the matter be further . advanced. The greens superin- , tendent has had a most unenviable time this season trying to cope , with the nine hole course and ; making it adaptable for play byi such large numbers of members j each week-end. Whether the sites i ofrering would be beneficial to the! local club is a matter for conjecture, , but a progressive move is one j that should meet with .tlie approval : of the .majority of club members.; The report from the sub-commit-i tee can be looked toi* ward to with interest by all concerned. :
