British troops had to use clubs and tear gas last night to disperse hundreds of Italians milling in the centre of Trieste demonstrating agaiust the decision of the Foreign Ministers to inter nationalise the eity. Only a few Americans were involved, says the Assoeiated Press correspondent but the 88th Divi ion stood by ready to go into action if the situation became worse. One Ameriean miiitary policeman was liardpressed after eoming to the rescue of Ameriean newspapermen attacked by a mob but British troops clubbed ?the leader of the attack to the ground and prevented fnrtlier violence. Reuter's Trieste correspondent savs tlie police on t,he instructions of Allied miiitary authorities, issued summonses against eleven members of the Trieste strike committee for failing to comply with an order to call off the general strike.
