CHRISTCHURCH, Wuly 1. A heavy swell coinbined witb the tide } at its month's peak has coused further | erosion at Sumner and damage to a j building and other property. At the' peak of today 's tide shortly after 6 p.m., several more feet of sand walL had been eroded for a length of about ] 350 yards from the Sumner Surf and j Life Saving Club pavilion oppositel Iiardwicke Street, to a point opposite Euston Street. An inspection this evening showed this stretch to .have suft'ered most, the front wall and live feet of! the floor of the women 's bathing shed| having faJIen to the beach, further ; scouring having occurred in front of the j pavilion, and a further 25 feet of stone j wall opposite Euston Street having 1 been broken. At this point at full tide j the sea was battering tlie wall only 16 j yards distant from the Esplanade and I was only 30 odd yards distant at the j pavilion past which several waves car-l ried water on to the Esplanade itself. j The thrcat of the tide and heavy swell attracted a number of residents! and watehers to the beach toniglit. Ob- ; servers' opinions differed, some consid- j ering that with the tide gradually abat-j ing in the next few days the danger of ( further damage would dinuiiisli even if ! the sea swell eontinued, but others con-j sider the danger is still acute where 1 i tlie end of tlie sea wall at Euston Street ] has been buffeted. Shipping Buffeted. A heavy south easterly in the inner harbour at Lyttelton today caused eonsiderable trouble with shipping berthed j at the wharves. I11 the early hoiu*s of ; Monday morning 'the stoamer, Paparoa, ] berthed at Gladstone pier east, smaslied ' a.ll lier fenders and extra lines had to ; be put out. At hig'li tide this eveningj Ihe seas became worse. Tlie Lyttelton! Harbour Board's tug "Lyttelton H " broke adrift and the erew had to be summoned to seeure lier. The Harbour Board's dredge, Canter-] bury, broke the very heavy mooring lines securing her and was made fast again with eonsiderable difliculty. The steamer Samythian at No. 1 breastwork smaslied all her fenders and some whai'f piles. The gale is preventing the departure of the Empire Dominica for Auckland and Empire Dynasty for Dunedin.
