Butter fov United States The first shipment of New Zealancl butter for the United States under the 10,000,000 pounds contract announced by Mr. Fraser on Thursday last, will be loaded 0 at Auckland by the Marlposa this week. It is expected the Mariposa will take 16,000' boxes. Escapee Recaptured The half-cast. Maori prisoner, Harry Martin, aged 22, who escaped from a police escort by jumping from the north-bound' Rotorua express near Purewa tunnel, 011 l Friday, was recaptured in his ! mother's house at Putaruru Maori i Pa about 5 p.m. on Saturday. Greer and Mrs. C. H. Wooding j against the Wanganui Hospital i Board. The clalm arose from the 1 board's having taken over the ■ Cairnbrae private maternity hospital under the Publie Works Act. Another Sharp 'Quake Christchureh experienced a. further earthquakes af ter nine o'clock | this morning. ' It; wa-s-small after j the shoek felt on Thursday morni ing. Nine minor. after shock§ were recorded locally during the 24 hours ended 9 a.m. yesterday. The intensity of this morning's shoek, wnich occurred at 9.8 a.m. was in the i vicinity of three on the Rossi Forel i scale.
i Levin Car Removed j A car belonging to Mr. Frank ! Croot, of Leyin, was removed from | Winchester Street on Saturday j night. It was a 1934 Nash, painted dark blue with black mudguards, I and was fitted with the old number plates, the registration number being 22933. The police are making inquiries. It is likely that the car will not be far away, in view of the fact that it still has the old plates attached.
I Deserler Gaoled ! The findings of the District Courtmartial, which sat at Papaj kura on Monday to hear. a desertion- | charge, ihave .been ' -phomculgated. The aceused was Gnr. Brian Thornton, who was charged with desertion and with losing byneglect j articles of clothing and equipment. ! The Court has §entenced him to 12 j months' imprisonment with hara J labour on the desertion charge, and on the other charge stoppages of i pay amounting to £9 12s 8d have j been ordered. I Less Rain This Year i The rainfall in Levin for the I month of June was 3.86 inches, | compared with 2.89 in June, 1945. Rain fell on ten days, and there were only five frosts. The lowest I temperature recorded was on June ! 8, when the thermometer's miniI mum reading was only 22 degrees. The total rainfall for the .first six months of this year is 21.36' incnes. The figure for the same period last year was 27.76 inches. These figures were supplied by Mr. H. Harvey, of Levin.
Successful in Land Ballof Five men from Taranaki and four from outside the province drew the lucky marbles at' land ballots for ex-servieemen at the New Plymouth office ,of the Lands and Sur.vey Department last week. The number of applicants was the largest for a land baliot in Taranaki for many years. Successful applicants were:— Manutahi block: J. N. Loveridge, Lepperton, 87 aeres; G. P. S. Campbell, Kaitoki, 80 acres; SR. Faulkner, Hawera, 78^ acres; G. H. Wildbore, Apiti, 90 acres; 4. Agnew, Feilding, 77-|- acres. Kent Road and Albert Road block: J. J. Dalton, Kapuni, ' 128 acres; A. C. Sandlant, "Wanganui, 114-^ acres. Mangatoki farm: N. M. Charman, Hawera, 50 acres.
