AUCKLAND, June 27. A tlmlHng storv of a cou rageous attempt by a police sergcant to arrest a driver who unlawfuUy cqnverted a car and who escaped after trying to dislodge the sei-geaut from the running board was told in the Police Ooijrt to'day when Paul Roger Devenish, agea 22 years, a seaman, appeared on three charges of unlawful conversion of cars, and with the theft of 40 gallons of petrol and tools. Sergeant H. Jones gave evidence that he recognised the vehicle as stolen, and as it was moving from a service station he attemptqd to remove the ignition kep fro.ro the'switeh. The accuspd, who was driving, screwed up the window, jambing witness' arm. Witness jumped on the running board to avpid being dragged. Accused drove alqng the i'oad erratically in an attempt to throw witness o|f tlie car, makipg sharp turns into sxde streets. Witness lifted. the bonnet and pujled the wires from the distributqr. Thp driver drqve close to posts in an attenipt to hrqsh witness oil. When the speed of the ear dropped to 15 miles an hour the accused rqlled out of the car throqgh and was committed to the Supreme the other door and rau awfty. Accused admitted all tlie charges Court for sentence.
