SEWAGE SCHEME URGED
"AWAKE !
LEVIN."
Sir, — The Mayor, in his statement in to-niaht's "Chronicle." mentions that ladies' conveniences are to be proceeded with for the travelling publie, Levin being the only town of its size where such conveniences are not available. I wonder if he knows of any other town of its size in New Zealand with such an antiquated sewage system (if we could call it ,a system). One shudders to think of the cesspits and multiudinous soakpits that -must . clutter 'the backyaTds of the twq big hotpls. not to mention other large buildings in our township. . If the Borough Council is satisfied with the prevailina' unhealthv position, why does the Heglth Department do nothing about it? Surely a moderp sgnitary system should be provided for local requirements before catering fqr the travelline' public. Yours etc '
Levin, June 26. [The appointment of the borough engineer was largely the result of the council's desire to expedite a drainage scheme, for which a large ! amount of preliminary work and ■ the taking of levels have to be completed. The nolicy of the council is to proceed with the scheme ap soon as ppssible. — Editor.]
